Leap Day

Leap Day...what a fascinating and ancient calendar event.

When did leap year originate?

The Gregorian calendar is closely based on the Julian calendar, which was introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. The Julian calendar featured a 12-month, 365-day year, with an intercalary day inserted every fourth year at the end of February to make an average year of 365.25 days. But because the length of the solar year is actually 365.242216 days, the Julian year was too long by .0078 days (11 minutes 14 seconds).

This may not seem like a lot, but over the course of centuries it added up, until in the 16th century, the vernal equinox was falling around March 11 instead of March 21. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII adjusted the calendar by moving the date ahead by 11 days and by instituting the exception to the rule for leap years. This new rule, whereby a century year is a leap year only if divisible by 400, is the sole feature that distinguishes the Gregorian calendar from the Julian calendar.

Following the Gregorian reform, the average length of the year was 365.2425 days, an even closer approximation to the solar year. At this rate, it will take more than 3,000 years for the Gregorian calendar to gain one extra day in error. ~by Ann Marie Imbornoni

Oh Johnny!

Grandpa suffered a moderate stroke on Friday and was significantly affected in his memory, recognition, personality and physical strength, calling a banana a screwdriver and calling his wife, Mrs. Mester. Mom took him to the doctor yesterday, who confirmed this suspicion. The doctor said mom is doing everthing right, stimulating him with music, reading, massages, walking and balanced meals. She requested a B12 shot before they left and he has miraculously bounced back to his old, relatively spry self. In fact, he sang to me on the phone tonight. What a pretty voice, I never knew! It made me beam...He didn't remember all the words, but here they are...

Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! How you can love!

Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Heavens above!

You make my sad heart jump with joy,

And when you're near I just can't sit still a minute.

I'm so, Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Please tell me dear.

What makes me love you so?

You're not handsome, it's true,

But when I look at you, I just, Oh, Johnny! Oh, Johnny! Oh!

Blue Hills, take two

Scott and I returned to the Blue Hills today...this time with new hiking boots! I have never had such warm, dry, comfortable feet for a day in the snow!! He found a great deal on line--half off for both of us. So now, we'll have to go often this Spring and Summer and break them in.

It was a beautiful afternoon on the trail in the fresh, powdery snow...

This tree looked like something on a haunted property--a bearded tree.

to have been skunked...

...is to know odor.

Tonight, Scott was outside in the backyard with Josta. He was admiring an odd shuffled out path in the nine inches of fresh snow and wondering if it was made by an opossum or maybe even ...a skunk. Not five seconds later, there was the little critter, walking along, minding his own business. The following is an excerpt from Scott's personal journal: "So I just stood there in abject silence as the skunk waddled ever closer to my squatting dog. Josta, oblivious and content as usual, finished his business and began trotting in the opposite direction of the skunk—a moment of hope. At this point the skunk spied Josta and became somewhat frantic. He tried to plow a new path in another direction but with little success. Josta, happily marking another spot in the snow of the abandoned house, turned to come back toward me and, consequently, the skunk."

"Before I noticed that Josta had noticed the striped visitor, he was tearing toward him in full attack mode. Even the skunk didn’t see him coming. Barreling toward the innocent varmint, Dog grabs the skunk by the neck like he’d done with so many similarly sized creatures before, and shakes him like a rag, throws skunk down, snatches him up again, shakes him like a rag. Man yells “JOSTA, COME! COME JOSTA…” Man yells again and again. Dog shakes again and again. Skunk holds steady waiting for just the right moment. Dog throws down Skunk. Skunk turns, Dog looks square at Skunk’s rear end. Skunk unleashes unmitigated stench spray. Dog throws back his face. Skunk waddles away as quickly as possible while Dog’s attention is turned to rolling his face in the snow to soothe his burning eyes. Man yells, “You stupid dog!, what a stupid dog.” Man begins to laugh and vacates the befouled vicinity wondering what his wife will say when the entire house smells like the stupid dog."

Ha! Ha! Despite the smell that is plaguing our house, I think it is hilarious that such a slow-moving little guy got the best of that rat killer. Scott found a home remedy online, invented by a chemist from Chicago that is hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and is very affective in neutralizing the potent chemical of the skunk. Ah, the life and times of Josta the Dog.

No Class Today

I'm sitting here, listening to good music, memorizing my monologue for class on Tuesday, catching up on blogs and emails, drinking hot cocoa, watching the snow come down (ten inches by tonight) and finally feeling better after a week of fever...So many projects to work on, but loving not being at school or work today.

I love Skype

I got to talk to mom and Dolly on line tonight! They went over to my brother's to use his web camera...Dolly was a little confused to say the least, hearing my voice so clearly, and catching glimpses of my ghostly visage, but not being able to catch my scent. I guess she kept running around the room and looking up on the dresser. She's adorable. Thanks, Mom!

Deadline!

Today was the due date for my thesis proposal on the life and works of composer Kay Swift. After tossing around several ideas for my dramatic premise (Fortune Favors the Fortunate, Simpler is Happier, etc..) I decided on one that Kay herself would endorse roughly drawn from a quote from her personal memoirs: Active Pursuits of the heart often sabotage Active Pursuits of Excellence. The official submission to the Graduate Thesis Committee is due March 7, so this idea will be refined over the next three week. To be continued...

Happy Valentines Day

Thanks for all our Valentines, Valentines! Scott and I had a lovely evening in, including a salmon, red skin potato and champaign dinner, a little scavenger hunt with candy, the soundtrack from Much Ado About Nothing and ... the flu. Ugh.

Wonderful News...

Scott was offered a position with an incredible landscape construction company called Jean Brook's Landscapes, that is great pay, with health insurance, vacation and 401K! Their season doesn't start until mid March, so things will continue to be a little tight the next couple of weeks, but he is so excited. Their projects are like those out of Better Homes & Gardens Magazine, (as shown in these images taken from their brochure) where he will be building stone walls, waterfalls, brick patios and creating scapes of hedges and flowers. His new boss Jean, recognizes Scott's experience and maturity and wants to use him in leadership positions...Seven months is a long time without knowing how you're going to make it from month to month. I am so grateful for his strong, healthy, able body and willing spirit.

So, then the other good news is...I got my ticket home for Spring Break!!! I fly in on the 15th and can't wait to see everyone again--especially being Easter week!

Missing Doll

Dolly's been vacationing with her grandparents in Indiana until I come home for Spring Break. I miss her like crazy, but I know she's getting the royal treatment--being with her second mom. Last night I dreamed she was back in my arms, so when I woke up I was a little sad...

A Portrait of Human Frailty

John Mester - 91 yrs.old
Annabelle Martin - 1 yr. old

"Lord, your love for me is so great, you breath life into my dry and dusty soul. You satisfy my thirst with living water. You anoint my head with perfumed oil. Yes! By your astounding mercy and love, I am no longer dead, but alive! And though I repeatedly refuse your blessing of milk and honey, choosing instead to wallow in the very dust you free me from, each day you lift me up again. I am redeemed by you, again and again. Praise you Lord. May your name resound in the whole Earth!" ~Unknown

In this season of Lent and preparation for Easter, when we are reminded that we all will return to ashes, may my gaze be constantly turned to Him, that I might begin to die to myself and be seen as precious in His sight.

My Dar

My lifelong neighbor of 24 years and best girl, Darleen, just told me a few hours ago that they are finally expecting a baby!! I'm so happy for them. Can't believe its true...All those years of playing house together--wow. I feel like I'm experiencing it with you! Love you.

Look in thy glass, and tell the face thou viewest,
Now is the time that face should form another;
Whose fresh repair if now thou not renewest,
Thou dost beguile the world, unbless some mother.
For where is she so fair whose unear'd womb
Disdains the tillage of thy husbandry?
Or who is he so fond will be the tomb
Of his self-love, to stop posterity?
Thou art thy mother's glass, and she in thee
Calls back the lovely April of her prime:
So thou through windows of thine age shalt see,
Despite of wrinkles, this thy golden time.
But if thou lived remembered not to be,
Die single, and thy image dies with thee.
Shakespeare~Sonnet III

Super Sunday

Go Patriots! I never paid attention to football until last year when the Indianapolis Colts where up against the Chicago Bears...how could I not tune in? So now, the New England Pats are in it with an undefeated season and we are having our neighbors, Brad and Olga watch the game with us tonight since they are HUGE fans. Should be fun--we actually have friends!
