Pristine Past Midnight

On our way home from my sister's, where we brought in the New Year quietly, the world was a muffled wonderland. As we started to pass the Main St. Cemetery in Mishawaka, we noticed its chain link fences were solid walls of white. We took turns in marveling at this wondrous, blanketed world. Scott turned to me and said, "Do you want to go for a walk?" "In the cemetery??" I asked. "Sure, it will be beautiful." My hesitation was brief, knowing Scott loves this kind of thing, as well as my willingness to be spontaneous. We parked on Donaldson and crossed the street. The night was so serene. I always think of everything holding its breath while God decorates it afresh with talcum and watery diamonds. It's A Wonderful Life came to my mind, as I stepped through the high wrought-iron gate, into this peaceful resting place.

Having recently talked about death, and wishing impossibly that both I could be there for Scott at this moment and he for mine, we instead talked about life and how we want to live it, using New Year's Day in the cemetery as our inspiration. Walking through the rows of gravestones was sobering, but infused with hope and possibilities...

The fire is dying now my lamp is getting dim
The shades of night are lifting
The morning light steals across my windowpane
Where webs of snow are drifting
If I could only have you near
To breath a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hand I love
On this winter's night with you
